Whether you are a Rockford resident or interested in moving to the area, knowing and understanding the most dangerous intersections in Rockford, IL can help you be more cautious in some of the most difficult driving areas across the city. Continue reading to check out which intersections you need to navigate with caution, and which you may want to avoid entirely.
Many Illinoisans are surprised to learn that the intersection of Alpine and Guilford at Brendenwood is one of the most dangerous intersections in Rockford. A seemingly quiet intersection, Alpine and Guilford at Brendenwood has seen its fair share of vehicle collisions.
Despite sidewalks and crosswalks in the area, there are no bike paths, and drivers have been known to speed through red lights to turn left before having to wait at the light again. We recommend exercising caution at this intersection and keeping a close eye out for pedestrians and bicyclists.
East State Street and North Perryville Road is a large intersection with many nearby shopping centers. It’s downfall is threefold: There are no crosswalks for pedestrians, no bicycle lanes for bikers, and too many lanes of traffic that converge into two as you head toward South Perryville.
What’s more, the lines are faded away or non-existent in many places, which makes it nearly impossible to determine which lanes are turn only; which lanes don’t turn on red, and in some cases, where you should even stop at the light. This is one intersection that needs your undivided attention, but it doesn’t necessarily need to be avoided at all costs.
Like many other dangerous intersections, IL-173 and Forest Hills has difficult-to-read road markings and many lanes of traffic. It’s surrounded by gas stations, restaurants, and even a banquet hall, which means increased traffic. There are no lanes for bicyclists and no crosswalks for pedestrians.
The intersection is surrounded by sidewalks, but if there is an event at the banquet facility, we recommend avoiding this area at all costs. Otherwise, you should be able to drive through with caution.
With shopping centers on all four sides of IL-251 and Harlem Road, there is plenty of congestion at this intersection. Getting through could take time, and it’s unavoidable as the area is home to many popular stores and restaurants.
Unfortunately, despite crosswalks surrounding the intersection and easy-to-read road signs, the number of drivers coming through this area makes it one of the most dangerous intersections in Rockford. Keep your eyes on the road and maintain safe driving speeds to reduce your risk of injury in this area.
If you’re headed to the Swedish American Hospital, you’ll have to get through the intersection at East State Street and Summit Street to get there. The area has all of the necessary crosswalks and sidewalks, but lacks bicycle paths. While the road signs are easy to read, there is a gas station on the corner and the lanes of traffic are pretty narrow.
Speeding, and the hospital being on the corner (increasing the amount of traffic in the ares) is more than likely the reason for so many accidents occurring in this intersection. If the Swedish American is your hospital of choice, this area is unavoidable, but as with most dangerous intersections in the area, as long as you proceed with caution, you may be able to avoid a collision.
